How It Works

A simple idea with a real human impact. Here's everything you need to know — whether you're a traveller, a hospitality worker, or a business.

For Travellers

Three steps that change someone's day — and maybe their life

01

Meet the team

Every resort, hotel, restaurant, and venue is full of people working incredibly hard to make your experience special. Most of them you'll never formally meet — they're the gardener tending the flowers before you wake up, the housekeeper who turns your room into a sanctuary, the porter who carries your bags with a smile after a 10-hour shift.

Unsung Heroes gives you a reason to seek them out. Browse staff profiles, read their stories, and discover the people behind the scenes at your destination before you even arrive.

02

Snap a moment

When someone goes above and beyond — ask if you can take a photo together. Share it to the Unsung Heroes community with a few words about who they are, what they did, and why they deserve to be seen.

Tell their story. How long have they worked there? What did they do that made your trip memorable? A few honest sentences from you can mean the world to someone who rarely hears that their work matters.

Your post goes into the community feed, where other travellers can like it, comment, and nominate that person for the monthly leaderboard.

03

Rate & tip your hero

Give them a score out of five and leave a short review. Then — and this is the important part — tip them in person. Cash, in the moment, directly into their hands.

Unsung Heroes is not a payment platform and never will be. We don't handle money, take a cut, or sit between you and the person you want to thank. The tip happens between you and them, right there and then — which is exactly how it should be.

Not sure how much to tip? There's no rule. Even a small amount — the price of a coffee — can make a genuine difference to someone earning below the living wage. The act of handing it over in person, looking them in the eye, and saying thank you is worth more than the amount itself.

Why it matters

The truth about hospitality wages

100%

tips go directly to the worker — no platform cut

Most hospitality workers earn below the living wage. In many countries, tipping isn't a bonus — it's the difference between getting by and genuinely struggling. The gardener working a 12-hour shift in 40-degree heat. The housekeeper who cleans 20 rooms a day without complaint. The maintenance worker who fixes a problem at midnight so your morning is perfect. These people are the reason your holiday is what it is.

And yet, in most places, they are the least likely to be thanked. Guests tip waiters and bartenders — the visible faces. The invisible workforce, the people who do the hardest and least glamorous work, are routinely overlooked.

A tip changes that. Not just financially — though the financial impact is real — but psychologically. Being seen. Being thanked. Having someone stop, look you in the eye, and say 'what you do matters' — that is something money can't fully capture, but money is the most honest way to express it.

We're not asking you to solve the hospitality industry's wage problem on your own. We're asking you to do one small thing on your next trip. Find someone who made your experience better. Thank them. Tip them. Share their story. That's it. That's how this works.

For Hospitality Staff

Your work deserves to be seen

Unsung Heroes exists because of you. Here's what the platform means for the people at the heart of it.

Recognition that follows you

Every tip, every five-star rating, and every community post builds a public record of your contribution. Your profile grows over time — a visible, shareable testament to the quality of your work that no employer can take away from you.

Real money, directly to you

Tips go straight from the guest's hand to yours. No platform fee, no employer cut, no waiting. What you receive is yours entirely — and it comes with the warmth of someone who chose to give it because they genuinely wanted to.

A community that has your back

You're not alone. Thousands of hospitality workers across the world are part of this community — sharing stories, supporting each other, and proving that the invisible workforce is anything but invisible.

Nomination for monthly leaderboards

Guests can nominate you for the monthly staff leaderboard. The most recognised workers earn a place in the spotlight — and the top three each month are celebrated across the platform and our social channels.

For Businesses

A platform that works for your venue too

Hotels, resorts, restaurants, and venues that embrace a tipping culture see real benefits — for their staff, their reputation, and their guests.

Staff retention and morale

Recognised staff are happier staff. When your team knows that guests notice and appreciate their work, it changes the atmosphere. Lower turnover, higher morale, and a culture of pride in the job — all driven by something as simple as a tip and a thank you.

Authentic social proof

Community posts featuring your venue and your staff are genuine, guest-generated content. They reach audiences that paid advertising never will — and they carry the credibility that only real human stories can provide.

Leaderboard visibility

Venues with the highest tipping activity appear on the Top Tipping Resorts leaderboard — seen by thousands of travellers actively looking for places where the staff are treated well and the experience is worth paying for.

Partnership opportunities

We work with forward-thinking hospitality businesses who want to champion their workforce publicly. From advertising to featured placement, there are ways to make Unsung Heroes work harder for your brand.
